Dating Turn Offs to Avoid

Common Sense Romance

When so many different aspects of a single date can go wrong it is no surprise that many adult singles find themselves feeling very nervous before a date. Those who often experience trouble when it comes to romance may find this problem to be even more severe and may even avoid dating simply to dodge the entire process.

Though every individual person may have specific tastes and certainly every couple may have a different dynamic, there are some basic rules to follow when it comes to passing those love tests that may result in something wonderful.

  Basic Preparation:

Every person's date begins long before they head out the door and taking a little prep time can do a great deal for your romantic life.  Following this basic dating advice might be obvious, but in a nervous rush these are the fundamentals you don't want to forget.

  • Bad Smell: Always bathe before going out on a date; if you smell bad, it is not only unlikely that you won't get close, but that you will ever get another chance. Use antiperspirant or deodorant as well and don't forget to add a little something extra (perfume, aftershave) but don't overdo it!

  • Bad Dresser: Be sure that your clothes are appropriate for the occasion and that you look well in them. If you don't dress to impress you may end up getting just that result.

  • Bad Hair: Shave, trim, brush or otherwise attend to any hairs that you think might be out of place. You never know how close the evening will bring you to your partner.

  • Bad Breath: Brush, floss and mouthwash that mouth before you leave. Taking a stick of gum, or a waterless brush might also be use full when approaching that goodnight kiss moment.

  • Bad Under Garments: If you think the possibility of things steaming up might be at hand, be sure that your underclothing isn't something that will embarrass you when those signs of attraction intensify.

  Basic Conversation:

The topics you choose and how well you listen can score big points in either the for or against category. Most of the advice for singles that you'll find will stress the importance of this skill whether dating online or off.  When your conversational skills are top notch you have an excellent chance of impressing your date.

  • Bad Topics: Discussing things that are gross during dinner, intimate in public or are far too revealing when you've barely said hello are often poor ways to relate to your date. Discussing past relationships may also bring about some bad feelings when still getting to know one another. Keep your discussion interesting by finding common ground that steers clear of pitfalls.

  • Bad Responses: Giving short, meaningless answers to your date may cause them to think you aren't paying attention. Maintaining eye contact and allowing your partner to know your paying attention by giving thoughtful answers in the discussion can really win a heart.

  • Bad Listener: Constant interruption or side tracking of the conversation may lead to your date asking for the check prematurely. Remember not to drone on about anything too much and always allow your partner time on the floor.

  Basic Romance:

Understanding how even a simple look can have a profound effect on how one person sees another may be a mystery to a good portion of the human race; however knowing that you're at least doing your best to pull off the right moves may just do the trick in winning your date over.

  • Bad Body Language: Turning away from your date too often, checking out other people or basically just giving the physical indication that you're distracted is a poor way to show interest. By focusing your body toward your date you can show them that for now at least, your attention is all for them.

  • Bad Touch: Using a moment of touch to show affection can be electrifying when subtle and well timed. Though each person may have a different set of physical boundaries it is important to take it slow until you know what your date's are.

  • Bad Flirt: Though no amount of flirting tips can help a person who is determined to carry things too far, too fast it is important that your style meshes well with your date's idea of romance. Initially flirting can be opened with compliments and eventually steered into a more sensual rhythm that perhaps subtly suggests more intimate ideas. The important key with flirting is not to embarrass yourself by coming on too strongly; remember a little mystery and a bit of restraint can drive a person wild.

Though most of these ideas seem like common sense to practice the amount of neglect that so many singles are guilty of in this area leads one to believe that common sense isn't always present on the dating scene.

Treating your date with respect and courtesy; while showing your interest in gradual stages, is a probably the most basic and successful strategy to follow. Practice these methods, while adding a little of your own style and personality and you are likely to enjoy a wealth of romantic success.
